Help lead the outstanding, professional team working to Keep Tahoe Blue by directing the organization’s in-house operations. Based in beautiful South Lake Tahoe, the League to Save Lake Tahoe (“League,” also known as Keep Tahoe Blue) is looking for an exceptional non-profit expert to lead the day-to-day operations of the organization. As Chief Operating Officer (COO), you will work alongside the League’s senior leadership team, where you will serve as a strategic planning partner and help guide decision-making and League operations that maintain a highly effective and efficient environmental non-profit organization. The COO position ensures the League – a Guidestar Platinum and Charity Navigator Four Star-rated 501(c)(3) – operates smoothly and that staff are properly supported and performing with excellence. The successful candidate excels at building and supporting interpersonal relationships, problem solving, non-profit governance, risk management, implementing management best practices, and creating a welcoming work environment.
The COO will support the CEO in managing the construction, transition to, and operations of a new 5,500-square foot office and environmental education/community center in central South Lake Tahoe, where our team of up to 25 professionals will be located in 2023. This is an exciting opportunity to help us build an exemplary professional work space and education center.
The COO is responsible for human resources functions and programs related to employment, compensation, benefits, and employee relations/engagement. The position also directs the organization's risk management functions, including managing insurance coverages, writing or coordinating the creation of contracts, and tracking of trademark protections. The COO supervises the Finance Director in their management of an annual operating budget of $4+ million and to ensure the organization’s accounting needs are met.
What the position involves:
- The COO is the administrative and operational foundation of the organization who is responsible for:
- Overseeing the financial health of the organization by supervising and guiding the Finance Director’s management of all budgeting and financial functions.
- Administrative and human resources activities and needs, including directing operations of our current building and the transition to our new building.
- Guiding the organization's implementation of cultural values, staff retention, and nurturing of high morale.
- Administration of employee benefits, annual reviews, onboarding, and general staff support.
- Guiding the organization in maintaining a healthy and safe work environment by staying up to date on California health and safety regulations.
- Knowledge and application of state and federal employee/labor laws, and regulations and maintenance of non-profit best practices.
- Protecting the League’s trademarks by working with outside counsel to ensure registration and monitor infringements.
- Ensure workspaces, buildings, and office equipment/supplies are in good working order and provide proper support for the organization’s work.
- With the support of the senior management team, help plan and execute emergency protocols, and ensure all staff are supported and safe.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Strong skills and knowledge of federal and state labor laws.
- Understanding and proven application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
- Use of discretion when dealing with financial and employee matters.
- Understanding of regulations, nuances of nonprofit accounting, fundraising, required forms, and governance.
- Excellent oral, written, organizational, and computer skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to utilize tact and diplomacy with staff and the League’s Board of Directors.
- Highly organized and capable of working in a changing environment.
- Demonstrates ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, employs excellent organizational skills, and has a strong attention to detail.
- Efficient and effective at managing and completing tasks to meet deadlines
- Ability to thrive with minimal supervision; possesses good judgment and works well with others.
- Thoughtful, articulate, an outstanding leader and communicator that promptly and effectively manages staff issues and needs.
- Computer fluency with Windows, Office 365 and Google Apps.
- Flexibility to travel to meetings in the Bay Area, Sacramento, Reno, and around the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Preferred:
- Primary residence is located in the Lake Tahoe Basin.
- Familiarity with Lake Tahoe environmental and policy issues.
- An interest and passion for environmental conservation and the League’s mission to protect, restore, and advocate for the ecosystem health and scenic beauty of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
- Experience using Quickbooks.
League-specific requirements:
- The chosen candidate must be able to dependably get around the Lake Tahoe Basin, Bay Area, Reno, and Sacramento at all reasonable hours and in all reasonable weather conditions, including heavy snow, and when public transportation is not available. The League does not provide a vehicle or other forms of transportation.
- Position requires some physical activity such as bending, stooping, carrying, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
- Employees are required to have a current COVID-19 vaccine.

Salary range: $100 - $108K/yr
