LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV –– After July 4th festivities, Tahoe’s beaches are often left littered with trash, which can hurt wildlife and the Lake’s unique water quality and clarity. Each July 5th since 2013, the League to Save Lake Tahoe recruits hundreds of volunteers to participate in organized efforts to clean Tahoe’s beaches. This July 5th, the League to Save Lake Tahoe will partner with Clean Up The Lake 501(c)3 and ECO-CLEAN Solutions to make an even bigger impact.

The Keep Tahoe Red White & Blue Beach Cleanup will activate volunteers to scour the shoreline around Lake Tahoe to remove litter, while divers from Clean Up The Lake – fresh off the completion of their unprecedented 72-mile cleanup of Lake Tahoe’s shoreline – will clean Nevada Beach’s subsurface shoreline of litter and firework debris that entered our Lake the night before. The BEBOT, an innovative, all-electric, beach-cleaning robot brought to Tahoe through a collaborative effort between the League and ECO-CLEAN Solutions will comb the sand for smaller litter debris left behind from the holiday events.

In recent years, Tahoe’s residents, visitors and public, private and nonprofit groups have come together like never before to preserve and protect the Lake’s health and beauty. Keeping construction debris out of Big Blue’s waters is an example of how collaboration is helping to Keep Tahoe Blue.

WHAT: Tahoe’s largest annual litter cleanup event, taking place on beaches around Lake Tahoe. Volunteers will collect trash and debris by hand; the BEBOT will sift beach sands to remove tiny bits of litter difficult to detect by people; and Clean Up The Lake’s dive team will patrol the underwater environment near the shoreline for the remnants of July 4th celebrations.

WHO: Staff from the League to Save Lake Tahoe, staff and volunteers from Clean Up the Lake, ECO-CLEAN Solutions’ principals, and dozens of event volunteers.

WHEN: Tuesday, July 5 | 9:30 - 11:30am

WHERE:

WHY: Tahoe’s beaches are the final stop for harmful litter before it enters the Lake’s blue waters. Collaborative litter prevention efforts – like what occurs on July 5th for the annual Keep Tahoe Red, White & Blue beach cleanup – are crucial to protect the Lake’s delicate ecology, its famous water clarity, and the experience of the millions who enjoy its natural beauty every year.

Clean Up The Lake 501(c)3 is a non-profit organization focused on fighting back against plastic and all forms of pollution, both above and below the surface of our local waterways, starting with Lake Tahoe. The organization uses SCUBA and dive teams to do a majority of its work, and has already removed over 40,000 pounds of litter from under the surface of Donner Lake and Lake Tahoe in the last 18 months. The team has further monitoring projects happening on these two lakes in 2022, with other cleanup efforts on Fallen Leaf Lake and June Lake in Mammoth scheduled this summer, and preventative efforts and educational campaigns in development to battle this never-ending pollution issue.
